Emily Fowke  Paintings of Nature

I'm starting working on paintings inspired by the Picos de Europa mountains of Spain, having returned for a second time to this area by train this summer.

As with paintings made over the past years I have been working more to a sense of synthesis of the experience of the place and moving to a slightly less 'literal' interpretation. I find this a challenge as there is so much to relish and enjoy just in details as they appear and the idea of leaving out certain elements, etc, is less natural to me.

I feel that this is worth continued exploration however with the aim of expressing an artistic response to places experienced, rather than so much a record in a way, which aims to connect to the sensations of these beautiful places.

Here are a few watercolours painted outside - quite quick, but chances to take in the area. I will be working from my memories and sensations as well as a stock of photos over the next six months.
